The figure of the Geisha in Japan has been historically linked to the absolute submission of women to men, it is an international icon that symbolizes the most extreme and savage inequality between genders.
A past that has been left behind in many aspects but that will never go away completely.
That is why I wanted to start from this figure, from this symbol, for this project of transformation and reinvention through art. Starting from basic features of the traditional Geisha, such as their iconic makeup and hairstyles/wigs, through which I establish the visual connection with the Geisha in the representation we all know, I elaborate a new character whose visual and contextual features convey the diametrically opposite values to those of the traditional Geisha.
I construct the symbol of a free, independent woman, exempt from any kind of submission to men, with her own overwhelming personality. I have built this symbolism using aesthetics and contexts adapted to the present: an intrinsically urban visual tone, developed through an amalgam of influences related to some of the most influential currents of popular culture of this century: graffiti/urban art, hipster aesthetics… elements, symbols and details through which I elaborate a universe of characters and contexts with which I plan to the viewer the concept of transformation mentioned at the beginning of this text.
Beyond the visual impact, the colorfulness and the strength of the aesthetics of this project, my desire is that the symbolism that I have sought to convey is captured in the right way and serves as a vehicle to convey a message.
I have chosen an iconic figure of a society like the Japanese, because today, despite being the most innovative country in the world in many aspects (art, technology …) is still largely based on values and ideas of submission of women to men much more anachronistic than those of the West. This contradiction has inspired me, as an artist, to create this project that I hope will serve as a reflection and contribution to an aesthetic and visual revolution.
